Build on your trade
Start with your unrestricted electrical licence. Complete the relevant training and practical assessment through a registered training organisation (RTO), then apply for the Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accreditation that matches your work.
Make storage your next step
Your solar accreditation does not automatically cover battery installation. Confirm the grid-connected battery storage (GCBS) pathway for your existing qualifications, then build product knowledge around compatible equipment and commissioning.
Start with the right foundations
New to electrical work? A short solar course does not qualify you to carry out electrical installations. Follow the electrical qualification and licensing pathway if you want to do the work yourself, or build a business with appropriately licensed people.

Electrical work requires the appropriate individual licence or certificate. A NSW company or partnership contracting for electrical wiring also needs its own contractor licence and an approved nominated qualified supervisor. An ABN or a solar training certificate is not a substitute.

SAA separately assesses applications for the relevant solar PV (GCPV) and battery storage (GCBS) accreditation. Installation pathways require an unrestricted electrical licence. Course completion is followed by SAA’s application, mandatory learning, examination and registration process.
SAA application process Current units & prerequisitesConstruction work in NSW requires general construction induction (White Card) training. Rooftop solar also needs appropriate working-at-heights training and site controls. SAA currently exempts GCBS-only applicants from its heights-certificate requirement; workplace safety duties still apply. Confirm insurance, ongoing learning and the requirements for your role.

In NSW, electrical compliance certificates (CCEW) use BCNSW eCert or an approved API from 1 July 2026, with submission due within seven days of testing. A CCEW records electrical compliance; it is separate from an STC.
